You do this by grinding rice grains with the pestle, then discard and repeat the process 2-3 times until rice has covered holes in the molcajete. Rinse with water and let dry. Next grind 2-3 cloves of garlic, that will create a nice layer that will cover the remaining holes. The molcajete will get smoother at you continue using it.
